MacBook Neo: The Laptop That Changes Everything

What Is the MacBook Neo?

The MacBook Neo is Apple’s most affordable laptop ever, announced on March 4, 2026 and released on March 11, 2026. Starting at just $599 — or $499 for students — it sits below the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, making macOS accessible to a whole new audience. This is Apple’s first Mac to use an A-series chip from the iPhone lineup rather than the M-series chips found in other Macs.

Design and Display

The MacBook Neo comes in four stunning colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo — each with a color-matched keyboard. Built from 90% recycled aluminum, it weighs just 2.7 pounds and measures half an inch thick. The 13-inch Liquid Retina display delivers a 2408×1506 resolution, 500 nits of brightness, and support for one billion colors. There’s no notch unlike other MacBooks, though the bezels are slightly thicker.

Performance

Under the hood sits Apple’s A18 Pro chip — the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro — with a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. It comes with 8GB of unified memory and either 256GB or 512GB SSD storage. In benchmark tests, it outperforms the M1 MacBook Air and even the iPad Air M3 in single-core performance. It handles everyday tasks like browsing, photo editing, 4K video playback and even casual gaming with ease.

Battery Life

Apple promises up to 16 hours of battery life and real-world tests confirm this is accurate. The MacBook Neo easily lasts a full day of web browsing, streaming, and document work — making it ideal for students and everyday users.

What’s Missing?

At this price, Apple made some trade-offs. The keyboard has no backlight, which is a noticeable omission in 2026. The second USB-C port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds — much slower than the primary port. There’s no Thunderbolt, no MagSafe charging, and external display support is capped at a single 4K monitor at 60Hz. RAM is capped at 8GB and cannot be upgraded.
